Jason Erasmus - Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Christchurch, New Zealand

Before Local Anaesthesia

Pre-operative instructions:

  1. You don’t have to fast before the operation.  In fact, it is advisable to have a normal meal before surgery to prevent low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) afterwards. You may drink as much fluid as you like.
  2. Most patients should be able to drive back home on their own, but local anaesthesia may occasionally cause dizziness.  If you have experienced dizziness after local anaesthesia in this past, it may be advisable to bring a friend or relative along to accompany you home.
  3. No smoking at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery.
  4. Please wear comfortable, warm loose fitting clothes with loose sleeves and wear low-heeled shoes.
  5. Please do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.
  6. If you wish, you may bring a favourite cd or i-pod to be played as background music during your surgery.
  7. Please do not take herbal medication, such as arnica for 2 weeks prior to your surgery, as it could cause excessive bleeding during your surgery.
  8. If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, stomach or bowel upset, please notify the office.
  9. If you take routine oral medications, please check with Mr. Erasmus prior to your surgery for instructions.
